Dual-Flush Toilet Tank Lid Replacement: How to Match the Button Hole and Model

Dual-flush toilet tank lids are especially easy to misidentify because the top button opening makes many models look similar. The opening is important, but it is only one part of the fit.

Confirm the tank model first

Remove the lid and look inside the tank for the manufacturer and model number. Write down every number exactly as it appears, including letters, hyphens, and prefixes.

Retailer item numbers and manufacturer model numbers can both matter. For example, some Glacier Bay toilets are documented under both a store item number and a Niagara model number. Our Glacier Bay vs. Niagara number guide explains that problem.

The button hole must match more than diameter

Check the diameter of the opening, but also note its position from the front, rear, and side edges. Two lids with similar hole sizes can place the button in different locations or use a different underside recess.

The flush button itself is usually a separate part from the ceramic lid. Do not assume a replacement lid includes the button unless the individual listing says it does.

Measure the complete lid

Measure maximum width and depth, then compare the outside shape. Look at whether the front edge is straight or curved, whether the sides taper, and how rounded the rear corners are.

Next, turn the old lid over and compare the inner lip, feet, tabs, and any molded numbers. The underside determines how the lid seats on the tank.

Do not substitute a single-flush lid

A similar solid lid without a button opening is not a proper substitute for a top-button dual-flush tank. Likewise, two different dual-flush lids are not automatically interchangeable just because both have round openings.
