If the toilet works but the tank lid is broken or missing, replacing the entire toilet can feel excessive. Sometimes it is. Other times a new fixture is the more practical choice.
The decision is easier when you separate the condition of the toilet from the condition of the lid.
Replace only the lid when the toilet is otherwise good
A replacement lid is usually worth pursuing when the tank and bowl are intact, the toilet flushes reliably, and you are happy with the fixture. This is especially true when the toilet matches an existing sink, tub, tile, or vintage bathroom color.
Keeping the existing toilet also avoids removing the old fixture, installing a new one, reconnecting the water supply, and disposing of the old unit.
Consider a new toilet when there are multiple problems
A whole-toilet replacement becomes more reasonable when the tank or bowl is cracked, the fixture has persistent mechanical problems, or you already planned to upgrade it. A hard-to-find lid should not be the only reason to keep a toilet that needs substantial additional work.
Compare total project cost, not sticker price
A replacement lid and a complete entry-level toilet can sometimes appear surprisingly close in price. But they are not the same project. A new toilet can involve installation supplies, labor or your own time, disposal, and possible changes to the appearance of the bathroom.
On the other hand, an unusually rare lid can be expensive because the original model has been discontinued and very few intact covers remain.
Color can change the answer
If you have a vintage pink, green, blue, bone, almond, or other coordinated bathroom, replacing only the lid may preserve a matching fixture that would be difficult to recreate with a modern toilet. See our vintage toilet color guide.
Identify the lid before deciding it is unavailable
Many people give up after searching only the brand name or rough dimensions. Search the tank model number, any lid number, and known aliases before assuming the lid cannot be found.

A simple decision rule
If the toilet is solid, working, and worth keeping, find the lid first. If the toilet itself has serious problems or you already wanted to replace it, do not let a missing lid keep you tied to it.
