Find the Kohler tank number first
Look inside the porcelain tank for a model number, often beginning with a K-. Clean the area if mineral buildup makes the marking hard to read. The tank model is usually a stronger clue than the bowl number.
Check the underside of the lid
Many Kohler lids have molded or stamped numbers underneath. Record every legible number before searching. A casting or lid number can point directly to the ceramic part or help distinguish between similar versions.
Compare shape, not just dimensions
Kohler lids can share similar length and width while differing in corner radius, front-edge curve and underside retaining features. Use measurements as a secondary check rather than the only fitment test.
Color matters
Older Kohler toilets were sold in numerous colors. White, biscuit, almond and other shades can look similar in photos, especially under warm lighting. If color is uncertain, compare the lid to a known white object in neutral daylight.
