Finding the right replacement toilet tank lid usually starts with one thing: the number stamped or molded into the toilet. The confusing part is that toilets can have several different numbers, and they do not all identify the same part.
Start inside the toilet tank
Remove the tank lid carefully and look on the inside back wall and side walls of the porcelain tank. Manufacturers often stamp, print or mold a tank model number there. This is usually more useful than a number found on the bowl when you are shopping for a replacement lid.
Check the underside of the lid
Turn the lid over on a soft towel. Many OEM lids have a molded or stamped part number underneath. A lid number can be extremely useful because it identifies the ceramic piece directly, but not every manufacturer marks lids consistently.
Do not assume every number is the lid number
A toilet can have separate numbers for the bowl, tank, lid, complete toilet model, mold or production date. Two toilets from the same product family can also use different tanks or lids.
What information should you collect?
- Manufacturer or logo
- Tank number
- Any number under the lid
- Approximate lid length and width
- Flush style: single flush or dual flush
- Color
If the number is unclear, take clear photos of the tank markings, the top and underside of the lid, and the toilet from the front. Comparing all of those clues is much safer than buying by measurements alone.
