Sterling Toilet Tank Lid Identification Guide

Sterling is a good example of why replacement toilet lids should be identified by model and tank number rather than brand alone. Sterling service-parts literature assigns different tank-cover part numbers to different toilet and tank families.

84537 and 1203861 are not generic Sterling lids

Manufacturer service documentation lists 84537 as the tank cover for multiple Windham configurations, including tanks in the 4045xx family. The same service literature lists 1203861 for a different group that includes tank 404551.

That distinction matters. A customer searching only for “Sterling toilet lid” can easily land on a real Sterling part that belongs to the wrong tank.

Start with the toilet and tank markings

Look inside the tank and record every model number. Sterling’s own parts guidance notes that model information may also appear on product literature, specification sheets, receipts or stamped areas of the fixture. If you still have the lid, inspect its underside too.

Cross-reference before comparing color

Once you have the tank/model number, establish the documented tank-cover family. Then verify dimensions, corner shape and underside profile. Color comes last.

Why a close measurement is not enough

Porcelain tank lids seat on a shaped rim. Two covers can have similar overall dimensions while differing in the inner lip, rear contour or locating feet. If the candidate lid rocks or only contacts the rim at a few points, do not force it into place.

What if the original lid is missing?

Photograph the tank from directly above and capture the markings inside it. Measure the rim at the widest points. These clues, combined with the model number, are far more reliable than trying to identify the toilet from a side photo alone.
